MoeBIOS M18 Assembly: A Green Vision for Bioplastics Recycling

The atmosphere in Berlin was electric as the MoeBIOS consortium gathered on December 1st for our highly anticipated M18 General Assembly Meeting. The air was crisp. As the year draws to a close, this meeting served as a powerful moment of reflection and transformation. It gave us a glimpse into the green change we are driving across Europe.

The consortium partners spent the day meticulously reviewing the incredible progress made over the last 18 months of the project. MoeBIOS is pioneering a circular bioeconomy by establishing three dedicated value chains for bioplastics (BPs). These BPs are found in waste streams from the packaging, agriculture, and textile industries.

We focused on bioplastics that currently lack robust recycling solutions: PLA, PHA, PBS, and PEF. Furthermore, we are proud to see our novel sorting and recycling technologies advancing to operational pilot scales. For example, our technical teams are translating laboratory breakthroughs into scalable, real-world solutions. They are doing this by optimizing enzymatic systems for degradation and fine-tuning chemical recycling protocols.

Planning for a Brighter, Greener New Year

The core purpose of this end-of-year assembly was to synchronize our efforts and solidify the strategic roadmap for the next six months. Moreover, the momentum built this year will propel us toward the critical demonstration phase. In this phase, we will integrate our innovations with existing industrial recycling lines.

This project is not just about reducing waste. Instead, it is about upcycling waste streams into high-quality end-products. These products must meet or exceed the standards of original virgin grades. Therefore, achieving this ambitious goal is the true spirit of circularity. It turns yesterday’s waste into tomorrow’s sustainable resource.

The Power of Co-Creation: Our Multi-Actor Approach

What truly makes MoeBIOS unique is the Multi-Actor Approach (MAA). This approach engages over 50 participants across the value chain, from waste managers to policymakers. This collaborative spirit was highlighted in Berlin. Our coordinator, Miriam Lorenzo, presented the project idea at the subsequent event: “Bioplastic Packaging Design: Safe, Sustainable and Recyclable”. However, external engagement is vital. It ensures our scientific progress aligns with market needs, regulatory expectations, and widespread societal acceptance.

The sense of hope and commitment felt in Berlin perfectly mirrors the turn of the year. Finally, it is a hopeful reminder that through collaboration and innovation, we can collectively achieve a sustainable and truly circular future for plastics.
