Are you ready to explore the future of bioplastics recycling? Join us on October 7, 2025, for our online event, “Bioplastics Sorting and Digital Tools Empowered by AI.” We are co-hosting this talk with fellow Circular Bio-based Europe Joint Undertaking (CBE JU) projects, ReBioCycle and PROSPER. This event is perfect for industry professionals, researchers, and anyone who cares about a sustainable future.
The Bioplastics challenge
Global production of bioplastics is expected to rise sharply, from 2.2 million tons in 2022 to an estimated 6.3 million tons by 2027. This growth offers a great chance to reduce our dependence on fossil fuels. At the same time, it creates a challenge for current waste systems. Today’s recycling infrastructure often isn’t ready for bioplastics. This leads to inefficient sorting and the loss of valuable materials.
The MoeBIOS project started to solve this very problem. We focus on bioplastics that currently lack good recycling methods, including PLA, PHA, PBS, and PEF. Our goal is to create new recycling supply chains for waste from packaging, agriculture, and textiles. We aim to transform this waste into high-quality, upcycled products that are as good as, or even better than, virgin plastics.
How AI and digital tools are changing recycling
AI and digital tools are key to our innovative approach. This event will show how these technologies are changing bioplastics sorting and recycling. For example, AI-powered sorting can accurately separate different bioplastics, which creates clean material streams. The PROSPER project has already achieved over 80% sorting accuracy with its AI-assisted technology. Meanwhile, MoeBIOS is creating digital libraries for bioplastics to make Near-Infrared (NIR) sorting technology more efficient.
The event will also cover how digital tools optimize processes. MoeBIOS’s Decision Support System (DSS), for instance, helps waste managers find the best recycling strategy for a specific waste stream. It analyzes environmental and economic factors to guide their decisions. Furthermore, both MoeBIOS and ReBioCycle are scaling up a portfolio of recycling technologies, such as mechanical, chemical, and enzymatic methods. They want to show that these methods are both effective and profitable on an industrial scale. MoeBIOS, in particular, aims to reach a Technology Readiness Level (TRL) of 6-7 or higher.
A collaborative vision for a sustainable bioeconomy
This event is more than a single presentation. It is a showcase of innovation from three CBE JU-funded projects. You can learn more about each of them by visiting their websites:
- MoeBIOS: https://moebios.eu/
- ReBioCycle: https://rebiocycle.eu/
- PROSPER: https://prosperbioplastics.eu/
Together, we are helping the EU achieve its goals for a competitive and circular bio-based economy. Ultimately, we want to reduce Europe’s reliance on fossil resources.
Don’t miss out!
This is a great chance to hear from three projects that are working together to solve a major bioeconomy challenge. The insights and innovations shared will be very useful for anyone in waste management, plastics manufacturing, and sustainable product development.
