Bioplastics Recycling: MoeBIOS at CBE JU Workshop

Sustainability is no longer just a goal—it’s a necessity. At the recent CBE JU Cluster Workshop, MoeBIOS demonstrated how innovation in bioplastics recycling is driving the shift toward a circular economy. By addressing key challenges in recycling, MoeBIOS is helping to reduce the environmental impact of plastic waste, especially in the packaging, agriculture, and textile sectors.

What Is MoeBIOS?

MoeBIOS is a Horizon Europe-funded project focused on revolutionizing the recycling of bioplastics. The project’s core objective is to make bioplastics as recyclable and economically viable as traditional plastics. Through advanced recycling technologies, MoeBIOS aims to upcycle bioplastics waste into high-quality, reusable materials. This process supports the circular economy, ensuring that valuable bio-based resources don’t end up in landfills.

At the CBE JU Cluster Workshop, Miriam Lorenzo Navarro, our project coordinator, presented the project’s latest achievements. She discussed the critical role that end-of-life solutions for bioplastics play in achieving a sustainable future. With over 60 participants from Horizon Europe projects, industry leaders, and policymakers, the workshop highlighted the importance of collaboration in solving the challenges of bioplastics recycling.

The event focused on how bioplastics are not just an alternative material—they are key to reducing carbon footprints and moving towards a circular, sustainable economy. However, for bioplastics recycling to be truly effective, it must be both cost-competitive and scalable. MoeBIOS is making significant progress by developing recycling technologies that make these materials easier to process and reuse.

Insights from the event: collaboration is key

One of the main takeaways from the event was the emphasis on collaboration. MoeBIOS isn’t working alone. The project has formed strong partnerships with sister projects like ReBioCycle and PROSPER, as well as with other stakeholders across the bioplastics sector. By sharing expertise and resources, these collaborations are accelerating the development and market adoption of bioplastics recycling technologies.

Additionally, the event underscored the urgent need for scalable solutions. While bioplastics like PLA (polylactic acid) and PHA (polyhydroxyalkanoates) are gaining traction in industries like packaging and agriculture, recycling these materials remains a challenge. MoeBIOS is addressing this issue by developing innovative recycling methods that integrate bioplastics into existing recycling systems. This approach will allow bioplastics to be recycled alongside conventional plastics, creating a truly circular material.

Why bioplastics matter for the circular economy

The CBE JU Cluster Workshop made it clear that bioplastics have an essential role in advancing the EU’s circular economy goals. Bioplastics help reduce our reliance on fossil-based materials and lower the environmental impact of plastic waste. But in order to scale up the use of bioplastics, we must overcome the current limitations in recycling technologies.

MoeBIOS is addressing these challenges directly. The project’s innovative recycling technologies ensure that bioplastics can be processed in a way that supports the circular economy. This means bioplastics will no longer be a one-time-use material, but a resource that can be reused and repurposed in an endless loop. This will not only reduce plastic waste but also help achieve sustainability goals across various industries.

Moving forward: scaling up for a greener future

Looking ahead, MoeBIOS is focused on scaling its recycling technologies. The project aims to integrate these innovations into pilot plants, advancing them to TRL 6/7. This will allow the technologies to be tested and refined in real-world industrial settings. By doing so, MoeBIOS is taking a significant step toward making bioplastics recycling a mainstream practice.

The workshop reinforced that MoeBIOS is not just an innovation project—it’s a vital part of the transition to a more sustainable, circular economy. By continuing to collaborate with industry leaders, researchers, and policymakers, MoeBIOS is helping to accelerate the adoption of bioplastics recycling. This will contribute to a future where bioplastics are no longer a niche solution but an essential material in a sustainable economy.
